Save for the occasional quick morning trip to get your mail with coffee in hand, you wouldn’t usually go commando under a winter coat. A good roof also needs an extra layer to protect the decking from moisture and last through 25+ Chicago winters. Synthetic Underlayment is installed everywhere that Ice & Water Shield is not. If a roofing contractor even attempts to offer you felt underlayment, kindly show him the door.

During the winter months, ventilation keeps the roof from heating up too much and melting snow. Snowmelt runs down to the eaves and re-freezes, creating Ice Dams and damaging the edges of your roof. All year round, attic vents exhaust moisture from those long showers (bathroom fans) and allows the underside of the roof decking to dry out should it ever get wet.
